Wool carpets are heaven - they're a treat to the senses, so if they get spilled with something, all Hell breaks loose. How do I know it? If you really have such a good eye for quality, you also know you should do everything in your power to maintain it. They're not cheap either.
So, if you don't act immediately, the stain will become permanent. Here are three common types of stains you can remove by yourself without a hassle.
#1. How to Remove Red Wine Stains
Make a solution of a teaspoon of mild detergent and a cup of lukewarm water. Avoid using detergents that contain alkali or bleach, or you may damage the carpet.
Saturate a clean cloth with the detergent solution and dab repeatedly at the affected area. It's recommended to blot from outside to prevent spreading. Don't rub on the stain for the same reason.
Rinse the soap residue by blotting it with a clean rag dampened in a solution of two parts cool water and one part white distilled vinegar. Don't mind the smell, it will disappear in 15 minutes.
Sponge the area with fresh water to rinse. Repeat, if the stain is still visible.
Blot dry with a clean towel and allow the carpet to air dry before walking on it.
#2. How to Remove Wax Stains
Let the wax cool down. It will be much easier to remove it hardened.
Use a spoon or the back of a butter knife to scrape up as much of it as possible.
Cover the entire area with a piece of brown paper.
Run an iron set on low over the paper. The wax will melt and will adhere to the brown paper. Repeat the process with a new piece of brown paper until it's all gone.
If there is some left, sprinkle baking soda on the spot and let it absorb the greasy residue of the stain for two hours.
Vacuum.
#3. How to Remove Spilled Coffee Stains
Cover the coffee stain with a thick layer of paper towels, and put some pressure to help absorb the liquid. Keep it up until all of the coffee is lifted from the carpet, and the towels remain dry.
Purchase a carpet spot cleaner from any local supermarket, or make your own cleaning solution by mixing white vinegar and water in a ratio 1:3. Professional cleaners state that no matter whether you're using your own cleaning solution or a commercial one, always test it on a hidden area of the carpet to make sure it won't discolour the fibres.
Use a white towel to apply the solution by gently dabbing at the coffee stained area. Use another white towel to blot it up.
Pour some water on a white cloth, and pat the carpet to rinse out the solution.
