4 Fantastic Tips to Maximize Space in a Small House

Living in an apartment, studio, or in a small house gives dwellers the usual problem of maximizing the small spaces allotted. If you find yourself in this situation, here are simple tips that can help you maximize the small space you have.

Choose furniture that can have dual or multiple functions.

In a restricted space, you can't really put in all the furniture you want. Thus, you have to be logical when it comes to your choice of household items. As a good suggestion, you may want to use a table which you can use for your child's study and function too as a dining table. Sofa beds are smart choices for the living room as they be minimized or maximized when needed. If you have two or more children, double or triple decks can accommodate them all in a single room.

Buy furniture that can be folded and unfolded when needed.

Aside from sofa beds, other smart choices for space optimization include foldable chairs and tables. There are also collapsible and flip-top types. All of them can be space-savers when not in use giving your house parts bigger moving spaces when needed.

Utilize the space under the stairs.

Modern home designs are putting emphasis on the space under the stairs. What used to be an empty space where dirt and cobwebs usually reside is now being turned into great space-savers. You can convert it as a reading nook for your child. You can even customize it to become a built-in book shelf or storage of some other things. Other homeowners with similar space problems utilized the under stairs as display space for some of their collectibles.

Make the stair steps storage spaces themselves.

Taking inspiration from a public ladder which has been turned into a musical piano, you too can impose your creativity on your own ladder steps. Choosing the right type of wood can make this task of converting the stairs into storages. You can designate each step to become storage of different things like your child's toys, some books, old clothes, and many other things you can think of. If living in an apartment, make sure to ask permission from your landlord.

Small living spaces should not hinder you to think of ways for improvement. Sometimes, embracing changes can help you loosen up a little to be more logical and practical towards utilizing small space for a more comfortable living.

Make your Home Elegant with these Decorating Tips

Have you ever walked into someone's home and you were just in awe. You probably thought, wow I'd love to be able to do that or I wish I could do that, or I'd love to have that. Home decorating tips can be fun and the changes in your home can leave you feeling victorious.

There are many people who can afford just about anything they want and they simply go buy it. They can afford to hire someone to come in and not only decorate, but clean their home and possibly do the cooking as well. That's great if you can afford it, but for the majority of people, they live on a medium income and watch what they spend, and those kinds of things are luxuries. This article will talk about home decorating tips that can make your house look great without having to spend a fortune.

When I think of home decorating tips, I'm not talking about what type of flooring you have or what your countertops look like. I'm talking about items you have on your countertops or the curtains on your windows. Window coverings can change the whole look of a room and you can find inexpensive fabric today that you don't even have to hem if you don't want to, that you just drape over a rod.

There are many home decorating tips for the window draping, but you can use your imagination on how to wrap it on the rod. You can wrap it around the rod at the ends and let it hang all the way across or you can wrap it around the rod in the middle too. You can go to your local dollar store and get many home decorating tips that will cost you pennies. I found some tassels that looked great hanging down from a window treatment that was literally a dollar apiece.

One of the first home decorating tips I believe that can change the whole look of a room is color. Instead of having white walls, try painting the walls light beige, tan, or cream color. These are pretty elegant colors that will go with about any colors. You can also opt for a more pronounced color as well. You can go to any local hardware or building supply store and look at a variety of paint samples.

Take home some of the sample choices they offer for your home decorating tips idea. You can then place them up on the wall for a better idea of what they might look like. This can be very helpful in deciding which color to go with. These home decorating tips can be a lot of fun so, include the whole family in the decision making.

There are so many home decorating tips to give, but pillows can make a huge difference in the way your couch or bedroom looks. You don't have to purchase expensive pillows, just look around for good deals. You can mix and match your pillows for great results.

Many home decorating tips will tell you that the pillows don't all have to be the same size or shape either, but the colors do need to go together and match up to the couch that you have. You can choose solid colors and stripes or flowers for your pillow choices, but the placement of the pillows is important.

Home decorating tips can be helpful for ideas, but you will ultimately have to make the choices say Tom Turner, the author. Just move things around differently and stand back and examine what you are looking at. If you don't like it, continue to change it until you do. There are many books and magazines on home decorating tips that can be useful.

5 Unique Ideas for Illuminating Your Home

Having proper illumination, whether at home or in your workplace is critical to the comfort of your home and the productivity of your work space. Here are some unique and interesting ideas for illuminating your most important spaces shared by Lydia Quinn

Skylights

Skylights are a wonderful way to illuminate areas which have no brightness at all, but you don't want to or can't have lights or light switches. Places like hallways, stairways and warehouses can benefit from skylights. In warehouses, in particular, skylights are fairly easy to install but will offer much light in the daytime, helping to decrease lighting costs. Since most warehouses aren't open at night, skylights are a wonderful and Eco-friendly lighting option.

Waterfall

This new kind of lighting gets its name from the way it looks on a wall. LED's are placed behind translucent fabric which is draped on a curtain rod. The result is a cascade of light that filters down the fabric which gives a glowing waterfall effect. This option is great for contemporary designs and interiors.

Kitchen

For your kitchen, try using under cabinet or in drawer lighting from LED's. These handy lights can be installed easily and don't use much electricity at all. Some LED bars can even be installed with stickers or other adhesives, you don't even need a hammer or screwdriver!

Mirrors

Mirrors are not lights, but by placing them in certain areas around your home, you can increase the effect of lights in that area. Try placing mirrors behind a corner chandelier to multiply its lighting effect. You can also place smaller mirrors around lights to amplify the amount of lighting you get from certain lights when the light is on. Mirrors are a great choice since they are low cost, easy to install and require absolutely no cost or maintenance.

LED

LED's are a great way to brighten up the night at home or in a commercial space. Use LED string lights to light up your walkways, paths, garden, patio, windows and doors. Use portable battery powered lights to attach lights to the inside of cupboards, closets, drawers and other places where you need light but can't get it. Solar powered LED lights are a great choice for lighting up any outdoor spot. From around your pool or spa to your sheds, dog houses, dog runs, patio, garden area, raised beds, or just about anywhere else that could use a little glow at night.

Improve Your Home Space With These Simple Tips

Some people say that performing any home improvement task can be very difficult, but that's only true if you don't know the right way to do it. Home improvement is much simpler if you know what you're doing. The following article contains some great information you can use when considering a home improvement project.

Always follow proper safety precautions. You may feel a bit silly donning a hard hat in the "safety" of your own home, however think how silly you will feel sitting in a hospital bed explaining how an errant piece of drywall put you there. Having breathing apparatus, hardhats and goggles could help you stay healthy while doing home improvement projects.

Attaching one of the pieces of hardware or fastenings you are storing to the lid of its container makes it easy to know what is inside. Trying to locate one screw or bolt may be problematic, even if you are organized. Written labels do not as easily convey the contents of a container like the actual hardware itself.

Finishing a basement is perhaps one of the best investments one can make. By renovating your basement, you will surely add an extra room that your family could use. Purchase the materials needed from the different discount stores in your area. The resale value of a house with a finished basement increases by over 30%.

There are many different kinds of screws. It's worth the brief amount of time it takes to confirm that you have the right kind of screws for your next job. It is best to utilize wood screws when doing projects that involve wood, as these types of screws can go through wood more easily. Anything that involves sheet metalconstruction would benefit from screws designed specifically for that purpose.

An over-the-range microwave is a great space saver for your kitchen. Microwave ovens vary in cost and also in what they do. They are especially good for cooks who aren't too focused on ventilation, as they use a recirculating filter only.

Use your credit card or a check to pay the contractor so you are able to place a stop payment if needed. This will ensure that you aren't taken by a scam artist. Between the two options it is best to pay with a credit card. This is because charges can be disputed.

Be sure and include landscaping in your home improvement plans. People look at the front of your home when they first see it, and this can leave a lasting impression. A well kept lawn, some shrubbery and a few flower beds can easily bring beauty to your property.

If your floor is generally squeaky, you can make use of construction adhesive to quiet it. And it takes quite a bit of sweaty work in the crawl space or the basement; however, the end result justifies the means. You just need to run a bead of glue down the floor joist seams to help secure the sub-flooring.

If one of your windows requires a new screen, but you are unable to locate a replacement that fits, consider how simple it is to just make one of your own. A simple frame kit can be customized to fit any sized window, and all you have to do is attach a screen to it. Some windows may require a particular screen, but an external screen can be added to nearly any window with the use of adapters.

This article has stated that you can use this information for a better home improvement experience. If you know the proper steps to improve your home, the process becomes much easier to complete. Utilize the tips within this article to finish your home remodeling project-Tiffani

5 Fantastic fencing ideas for New Home

New homes are always gorgeous, but sometimes the yards seem a little empty and unfinished. One way to enhance curb appeal and add character to any new home is with fencing. There is a veritable plethora of fencing options to consider, and while that may seem a bit daunting, here are five hot fencing ideas to help narrow down the field.

1. French Gothic Fencing: It takes the classic picket fence look and makes a more elegant statement. Each picket rather than coming to a direct point is fashioned to resemble a spear head. For additional style the pickets can be cut in various lengths and assembled to form a scoop pattern between foundation posts. This is an ideal look to encompass the front yard or add an element of class to any garden.

2. Scalloped Shadow Box Fencing: Putting up a privacy fence can also be about adding character. Shadow box fencing alternates panels affixing them to the inside and outside of the connective railing between foundation posts. This eliminates the sense that there is an inner verses outer side to the fencing, providing uniformity while also providing a more aesthetically pleasing look. The added scalloped top of this fencing is the finishing touch that makes it more than just boundary marking for your yard.

3. Aluminum fencing: Aluminum provides a less expensive and easier to maintain alternative to wrought iron, while providing the refined look that wrought iron brings to mind. It can be styled with pressed point pickets, smooth topped without exposing pickets, or a variety of other ways to provide a visually pleasing and safe fence around your yard. With aluminum there is no concern of rust, and color coatings can be added to provide extra protection as well as a more pleasing appearance.

4. Vinyl Privacy Fencing: Vinyl is a durable material ideal as an alternative for wood for privacy fence construction. It can be fashioned with various textures to resemble wood grain or wicker, and can be colored to match or complement your home. Being vinyl also means that a quick spray with the hose will clean dirt off quickly and easily. No need to worry about wood rot, or rusting.

5. Colored Chain-link Fencing: Many residential areas abound with chain-link fencing due to its wide availability and low cost. However, many home owners do not take advantage of the availability of colored chain-link fencing. Colors such as black, brown, green, and white can provide a better look than the standard grey metal finish.

When thinking about the type of fencing that would suit your home best, consider whether your fencing will be purely ornamental or if it will need to provide a sturdy barrier to keep children and pets safe. Also the type of material used to construct the fencing may be important when you consider maintenance and how well it will withstand weathering - Jon Folsom

How to Get Rid of Ugly Wallpaper! - Top 10 tips

I broke my promise to myself and stripped wallpaper again. The only reason I did this is for $100,000 profit. My family and I did not have time to wait for professional help. We sold our investment property before finishing the work and needed the home ready for appraisal.

While stripping the wallpaper, I realized that many homemakers get wrong advice for this horrendous task. After years of experience on over 30 houses, I offer my tried and best tips:

1. Use a clothes steamer or rent a professional steamer

2. Soak a large section of the wall

3. Run a "Paper Tiger" scoring tool across the damp section

4. Steam the section again

5. Spray the section with fabric softener and hot water

6. Score the section with the paper tiger again

7. Steam again

8. Remove any curling edges (sometimes large areas peel off)

9. Scrape with a six inch sheetrock blade

10. Scrub with hot water, TSP, and a sponge with a scratchy surface

Repeat the above steps on the section until most scrapes off easily

Cautions: Use the Paper Tiger gingerly so you don't scratch or gouge the walls. Use gloves with the harsh chemical TSP.

5 Great Faux Painting Tips

Preparation- Fix walls first

Tape off your ceilings and baseboards with low tack masking tape. Blue tape works great. Use a cloth drop cloth instead of plastic. Drips will soak into the cloth and dry quicker so you don't track paint thru the house. Fix holes or cracks on the walls first and remove dirt.

Base coat

Water based Latex Paints in "satin" or "eggshell" is the best type of paint to use for your base coat.
Make sure you paint the patches where you fixed the wall with the same base coat as the rest of the wall. If not as you can see by the picture to the right, the patches will show through. That's because glazes are not like paint which is opaque. So the texture of the wall must be the same unless you want to have places where the faux finish looks different. Hint - you can paint designs on the wall with a different texture and when you faux paint the wall, the designs will be enhanced yet subtle.

Practice first

Always practice your faux painting technique on boards first. You can save money by purchasing poster boards at any stationary or office supply store. Paint the board with the same paint you are using for your basecoat. Test out the glaze on a small section to see if your mixture needs to be darker. Any glaze can be darkened with a drop or two of acrylic paint.

Tape your board onto a section on the wall instead of painting on the floor. That way you can practice the technique just the way you will be doing it on the walls.

Once you are happy with the board then proceed to a discreet place on your wall first. Remember, there are no mistakes in Faux Painting; if you don't like what you see, just paint over and start again!

Lining your trays

If you are mixing your own glazes, line your trays with a plastic bag. This saves time and mess because you don't need to wash the tray afterwards. If you need to quit and continue your project the next day, bring the back of the plastic bag to the front and tie up the bag with a knot. That way the glaze will not dry out and you can use it the next day.

Then, keep your tools in a plastic bag, also when you are not using them. You can safely keep them overnight, too. However, we don't recommend going more than one day without washing out your tools.

Mixing Glazes

Mix just a small amount of glaze first. Usually it is 3 parts glaze to one part paint. After you mix a small amount, try that out on your board first to see if the color looks according to what you desire. If not, then add more glaze or more paint until you are satisfied. Then put aside a small puddle of the glaze to the side, fill your tray with the rest of mixed glaze and match the new mixture to the small puddle that you have set aside.

When you run out of glaze, then do the same thing. Set aside a puddle of the mixture before you totally run out. Then refill tray with glaze and keep adding paint until the mixture is the same density in color. Place a small puddle next to the puddle you have from the mixture you were using to compare the two. This is very important, because if the next tray of glaze is not the same, you will notice a difference on the walls - Sandra Silva

Top Tips for Working on Plaster Walls

If you live in an older house, say 50 or 60 years or older, there is a good likelihood that you have plaster on your walls. Plaster walls were very common, especially in the late 18th century and 19th century. Plaster was fairly readily available, was workable, and was capable of producing very smooth walls and ornate embellishments. It was and is however, very difficult to worth with. It took a fine plasterer many years to learn his trade under the careful instruction of a master plasterer.

Plaster is still widely available, though rarely used. Just check the painting aisles of  your local home improvement center and you'll see it mixed in with spackle and patching compound. The reason for its demise was the invention of joint compound. Unlike plaster, joint compound (or drywall compound) is easy to work with. It is slow to set up and harden, is very easy to sand, mixes easily, can be purchased already-mixed, and is easy to clean up. Joint compound works by simply letting the water evaporate out, leaving the hard, white stuff on the wall.

Plaster, on the other hand, sets up quickly, hardens like cement, is very difficult to work with once it starts to set up, is hard to clean up, and must be mixed up as needed and in quantities that can be worked with quickly. Plaster as it sets up, is actually a chemical reaction between the solid plaster and the water.

For this reason, joint compound is the natural choice for most new homes and patching jobs. However, plaster is by far the superior product. A plaster wall is rock hard, has a solid sound, and feel, is not easy damaged or scratched, and can withstand some abuse. These properties make for some interesting remodeling and repairs.

A simple task such as hanging a hook for a picture frame can cause large chunks of plaster to break free from the wall and come crashing down. Try to drive a drywall screw into plaster can be an exercise in frustration as chunks break out of the wall and the screw getting dulled by the plaster, Drill bits and saw blades dull instantly on contact.

Because of these challenges with plaster, I have compiled a few tips for working with it. Be aware, that these work for me in most situations, but plaster can be different and behave differently in different locations, so work very carefully.

 1. When hanging a picture frame from a hook with a nail in it, first tape a large piece of masking tape over the area where you will drive the nail. This will help prevent chip-out. Once the nail is in place, remove the tape.

2. Another way to insert a wall hanger for a picture frame is to drill a small pilot hole for the nail. The pilot hole need not be deep. Just deep enough to penetrate the topcoat of plaster. If you see brown dust coming from the drill bit, you are through the topcoat and into the brown coat.

3. To drive a screw through plaster, always drill a pilot hole!

4. Never use a drywall screw in plaster to hold anything! Even though it may seem that the plaster is holding it in place, you risk tearing out a large chunk of plaster should you find a weak spot. Always screw through the plaster and into the studs.

5. When screwing through plaster and into the wall studs, make sure you are into the wall studs and not the wood lath that holds the plaster on the wall! Pulling down lath is one of the worst things you can do, as it will pull down large chunks of plaster with it!

6. Standard stud finders don't work on plaster walls. You need stud sensors that feature some sort of deep penetrating technology. Common stud finders are designed for half-inch drywall walls and can distinguish plaster thickness very well.

7. Use the tapping technique to find studs. Plaster has good harmonics and by tapping or rapping it with your knuckles, you can usually hear the hollows between the studs fairly easily.

8. Like anything else in an old house, be extra careful! There weren't building codes when many of these houses were built so there is no guarantee that you wall studs are evenly spaced, that there aren't old pipes in the walls, or that abandoned and antiquated plumbing and electrical lines exist in the walls.

Remember, work slowly and smartly! Never rush an old house project. Take a few minutes to think things out several times. You will still run into surprises, but if you work slowly and deliberately, hopefully, they won't ruin your day! Dean Novosat, the author is an avid do-it-yourselfer and remodeler.

How to Choose Right Paint for your bedroom?

Nothing has a bigger impact on the mood and ambiance of a room than color. When it's time to repaint your master bedroom, color choice is paramount because your goal is to create a room that is restful and conducive to recharging the body and soul. Here are some tips on how to zone in on the right color for this all important paint makeover.

A Restful Canvas
When repainting a bedroom, or any room for that matter, first look at the space with fresh eyes. What is about the room that appeals to you and what would you like to change? Does the room seem like a dark cave, or does it seem cold and impersonal. Then consider the mood you wish to create, your style and what furnishings you intend to keep or replace. While many people automatically think a bedroom should be painted in a light color, a deep color is a good choice for a bedroom because it has a cozy cocooning effect. Even if a room is small, the fact that it looks cluttered may have more to do with too much furniture, or furniture that is too large, than it has to do with color. De-clutter first by getting rid of whatever you don't need in the bedroom. Clutter will make the room look disorganized and chaotic, and feel anything but restful, no matter what color the walls are painted.

What's more important in a bedroom than the depth of color is the tone of color. A soothing shade of travertine taupe, while deep, is restful. A shade of mauve, while lighter, can have an electrifying tonal effect that is too energizing or 'loud' for a bedroom. Neutral tones and pastels give you many options for bringing in punches of color and style with bedding, accessories, window treatments and furniture.

Before choosing paint color, decide on a look and color scheme to help you narrow your choices. Home interior magazines, books and websites can give you lots of design ideas; keep a file of torn or copies pages or website print sheets of your inspiration room. Once you have a good idea of your 'dream' bedroom, find an item that contains the colors and style you are after. A teacup, a pillow, a pillow sham - it doesn't matter as long as it inspires you and keeps you on track. Take this inspiration piece with you when shopping and it will be easier to achieve your design goal.

Now that you've narrowed down your paint choices to two or three options, don't rely on tiny paint cards from the store to give you an accurate idea of how the finished walls will look. Paint a 2x2 foot square of each color on different walls and live with them a few days in different light conditions to help you make the right choice. You're going to paint over it anyway, so give yourself a chance to see how you will like living with each potential choice.

Rely on your inspiration and choose bedding, pillows, curtains and window treatments, lamps, area rugs, wall art, candles, a chair or bench and accessories to add the finishing touches to you restful bedroom retreat. Accessories are where you can really bring in contrast or harmony with color, and bring in the finishing touches that make a room personally yours. - Jeanelle Deppner

Structural changes are completely unnecessary, especially when you are working within a budget.

Keep Clear In Mind Your Priorities

It is easy to get carried away on details and forget about the core of your kitchen, the plumbing and electrical areas. Make sure that you give attention to these all important areas, because without them, a beautiful kitchen means nothing! Be sure that any leaky water pipes or faulty wiring is taken care of before you do anything else.

Final Tips And Advice

After you have set the budget and made sure the vital areas of your kitchen, like the plumbing and the electric work are secure, you can start to think about the appearance of you kitchen. Surfaces, such as your counter tops, your cabinetry, flooring and walls are all easy ways to make a huge difference in your kitchen makeover. Unsurpassed Beauty

When you install soapstone countertops in your home, you have the assurance of knowing that no one else in the world will have exactly the same slab as you have. Colors vary greatly, and it's likely that the piece you receive will have intricate and distinctive veining throughout the stone. If you like the piece in its original state, you need do nothing to it. However, if you prefer it to have a richer hue, you can apply mineral oil to the surface, and you also have various textures from which to choose. You can select a highly polished surface or one with a more rustic, rougher feel.

Durability

The durability of soapstone countertops is unparalleled. Heat is no problem with this material, so cooks can pull a hot pan from the stove or oven and place it directly onto the surface without worry of damage. Spills are also a non-issue with this surface because permanent stains will not occur. Many homeowners are pleasantly surprised at the long-term durability of this material. In fact, it might last for generations, maintaining its beauty and vibrancy. Superficial scratches could occur over the years, and if you leave them, they will become a natural part of the patina of the aged counter.

Strength

The strength and density of this material prevent the absorption of any liquids. Tomato sauce, red wine, and grape juice are no match for soapstone countertops. Even the most acidic liquids will clean up effortlessly. Furthermore, you will never have to perform maintenance to keep up the non-porous properties of the material. Other countertops require the repeated application of sealants, but soapstone countertops are maintenance-free. The only step you might perform is applying mineral oil if you choose.

Environmentally Sound

Quarrying this material is a simple process, with custom cutting and cleaning being the only steps necessary to prepare it for installation. This natural material is completely recyclable. Homeowners can also enjoy the fact that this choice is free of potentially harmful toxic chemicals and sealants.

The cost of this surface is comparable to other natural stones. However, you can save significantly with this choice because of the simple installation involved. Instead of paying for expert installation, many homeowners can easily install it themselves.

How to make Your Pool Furniture Look New

Umbrellas have been raised, pools have been cleaned and the furniture has returned from its winter hibernation. As guests continue to roll in, it's important that chairs, lounges and tables remain cleaned up and looking like new! There is no other types of furniture that take more punishment than outdoor furniture, whether it's taking a beating from the sun or carrying the weight of 6 inches of snow. While most outdoor fabrics and finishes are built to withstand the elements, annual cleaning can go a long way toward making them last (even past their intended life span).

Commercial grade outdoor fabrics are extremely durable, but dirt and grime can work their way into the toughest sports. It is best to start by dusting off any surface dirt, then use a sponge or soft bristle brush to get into the weave of the fabric. Rinse the cushions thoroughly to remove all the soap and allow the fabric to air dry. If wicker pieces are still in good condition, they may simply need a quick vacuuming and a wipe-down with a cloth and mild detergent mixture. Using a soft bristle brush, scrub off any stubborn grime then rinse with a cloth saturated in plain water. In addition to just looking dirty, dirt and grime can cause teak products to mildew so it's essential to give them a thorough scrubbing with a water/mild detergent and a soft bristle brush. Do this once a year and the teak should remain mildew free. Oiling teak can also help it retain its buttery gold color and keep the grain from cracking. Most commercial grade metal pieces are finished with a protective coating that makes them relatively impervious to all weather conditions. Pool furniture is exposed to a lot, and aluminum is built to take the heat and the elements. Prolong the life of the furniture by keeping it clean and properly treating it as needed:

Acrylic Furniture:

Lack of cleaning acrylic surfaces can cause them to become marred with stains, dust, dirt, mold and mildew - however, cleaning them the wrong way can harm the surfaces.

Fiberglass Furniture:

Fiberglass pool furniture is one of the most popular types of outdoor furniture on the market today. It's highly durable, affordable, comes in an assortment of styles and most importantly is easy to maintain. There are certain steps that should be taken to effectively clean fiberglass furniture.

Recycled Plastic Furniture:

Most recycled plastic furniture has been purified and UV protected. It's generally cared for and cleaned with soap and warm water. For certain stains and additional cleaning power, a 1/3 bleach and 2/3 water solution can be used on recycled plastic furniture without affecting the color. The surface characteristics of the furniture may require the use of a soft bristle brush to get into the creases.

Resin Furniture:

Outdoor resin furniture is an ideal alternative to metal or wood furniture, which can rust, splinter, continually need painting or are just plain heavy. Keeping new tables and chairs clean and looking good for years to come is easy - it's the older pieces that take a little more effort to restore to a cleaner, newer looking state.

Sling Furniture:

Get sling outdoor furniture looking clean and fresh with a little elbow grease, and cleaning supplies that is already on hand. If mildew is a problem, a bit of extra effort can help control it.

Vinyl Strap Furniture:

Vinyl strap furniture is ideal when looking for the perfect addition to a pool area. However, body lotions and oils can cause damage to vinyl straps. In fact, if possible, require guests to use a towel when sunbathing or drying off from the pool so that vinyl strap furniture will have a longer life span. Vinyl is porous, so it is important to protect the pool furniture from moisture and chemicals.

Be sure to inspect furnishings and site amenities every spring for general wear and tear. Never throw furniture into the swimming pool unless a hurricane is imminent and there is nowhere else to put it. This is NEVER a good way to clean off pool furniture.Meagan Deacon

4 Common Carpet Cleaning Mistakes

When it comes to carpet cleaning, there's no shortage of information available on how to get the job done. Unfortunately, there's also a lot of misinformation out there, and it can lead to costly errors. Beware of these four common misconceptions when deciding if it's time to hire a company to do the work, and you'll not only save money, you could save your carpet.

1. You only need to clean your carpet every few years, or even once a year.

This common misconception can lead to a dirty home, as well as unnecessary wear and tear on your floor coverings. Dirt, by nature, is abrasive. Think of its coarse texture and what it feels like on your skin. To your carpet, it's like sandpaper, and by repeatedly walking on a dirty floor and grinding the dirt into the fibers, you're actually causing it to wear faster. Vacuuming can help and should be done frequently, but consider a deep, thorough cleaning any time your floor covering begins to show dirt.

2. You only need a deep cleaning when you can see dirt.

Unfortunately, a dirty rug isn't the only way to know it's time for a deep cleaning. Invisible materials get tracked into your home daily, like pollen, bacteria, fungus, and other chemicals. These can cause a flare in allergies, breathing problems, and even emphysema over time if they're not professionally removed. Cigarette smoke is another substance that needs to be addressed, and should be regularly removed to keep your home smelling fresh and to reduce exposure to the harmful chemicals it contains.

3. You can wash all carpet the same way.

The material, texture, padding and several other factors will determine the best method of sanitizing your rugs and floor coverings. There are dry methods as well as hot water methods to consider. Equally as important to the washing process is the drying process, and making sure you're using a high-quality vacuum. Professional companies can offer advice and assistance to ensure you're using the right method for the materials found in your home.

4. Any carpet cleaning company can help.

Just because a company has the latest equipment and seems to know their stuff, there are a few more things to ask before you trust them with the floor coverings in your home. The most important is to ask if they are certified. You want to work with companies that have received a Cleaning and Restoration Certification from the Institute of Inspection. This certification is only awarded to those who have completed a formal, written examination, akin to a degree in carpet cleaning. Also, ask about the company's satisfaction policy. Most reputable companies will offer a satisfaction guarantee, thereby guaranteeing both their work and their professionalism and helping you to feel at ease.

Keeping your home clean and pollutant free is important, not only to your health and the health of your family, but to the longevity of your floor coverings. Regular washing and disinfecting is the best way to accomplish this, and by avoiding these four common mistakes you can be assured you are making the right choice for the floors in your home.Ace Abbey
