Gas Grill - Maintenance and DIY Cleaning Tips

To a grill enthusiast, the gas grill is an indispensable kitchen equipment. Today, more and more people prefer the convenience offered by gas grills. As opposed to charcoal grills, they can be used, cleaned and maintained easily.

You need your grill to liven up dull outdoor parties. Make sure that you take care of your gas grill so it will always be present for all the outdoor parties you are going to throw in the future. Here are some maintenance tips you would want to know:

1. Always keep your grill clean. Right after using it, turn up the temperature to its highest setting to heat up the grate and the lava stones. This will remove the accumulated fats and oil drippings on the lava stones and the grates. Heat it up for about 15 minutes. Let it cool down for a bit and wipe the grates with a clean towel. Wipe the greasy areas with dishwashing soap and water.

2. If your grill has removable racks, try to disassemble them and clean them. Soak them in soap water and let the food residues loosen up. Wipe the dirty areas using a sponge. Rinse the racks in running water and dry them up.

3. Do not use stainless steel cleaners when removing the oil and hardened fats and food from the exterior of the grill. Also do not use steel scraper. Just treat the crusty areas with lemon juice to loosen them up. Mix warm water and dishwashing liquid and remove the stains using sponge.

4. Turn off the gas tank when not in use. Also check the connection of the tank to the grill. Make sure the connection has not loosened up if you transferred your grill. To check for leaks, rub soap on the connected areas. If bubbles appear, gas is leaking. Turn off the propane tank and adjust the connection of the hose.

5. Replace rusty grill racks. If you can't replace them immediately, scrape off the rusty areas using a metal brush. However, this is not sanitary so you have to replace the rusty grill as soon as possible.

6. Check the flame holes of the grill. Remove clogged fats or oil inside the holes. Use a thin wire and stick it inside the hole to remove the clog.

7. Replace your propane gas tank if it is already rusty. You can swap it with a new one when you buy from the gas tank store. - Alan Cassidy
